Markarian’s Chain is a stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Cluster. It was named after the Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion early 1960s.
8 galaxies compose this chain: Messier 84 (NGC 4374), Messier 86 (NGC 4406), NGC 4477, NGC 4473, NGC 4461, NGC 4458, NGC 4438 & NGC 4435.
La Chaîne de Markarian est un ensemble de galaxies appartenant à l’amas de la Vierge. C’est Benjamin Markarian qui a le premier découvert qu’elles étaient animées d’un mouvement commun.
La chaîne comprend huit galaxies :
