A ring galaxy shaped by a head-on collision, from Hubble and Webb data.

The Cartwheel is a ring galaxy, and rings of this kind are made by collisions. A smaller galaxy passed through this one near its centre, and the shock drove a wave of star formation outward — the bright ring is that wave, still expanding.

This image combines two telescopes and twenty-eight years. Hubble recorded the visible light in 1994; Webb added the infrared in 2022, where the dust and the hot young stars in the ring show through. It is the only page on this site built from two instruments a generation apart.

La Roue de chariot est une galaxie annulairedont ce genre d'anneaux naissent de collisions. Une galaxie plus petite est passée à travers celle-ci près de son centre, et le choc a propagé une vague de formation d'étoiles vers l'extérieur — l'anneau brillant est cette vague, toujours en expansion.
 
Cette image combine deux télescopes et vingt-huit ans. Hubble a enregistré la lumière visible en 1994 ; Webb a ajouté l'infrarouge en 2022, où la poussière et les étoiles jeunes de l'anneau apparaissent. C'est la seule page de ce site construite à partir de deux instruments séparés d'une génération.
