The Cygnus Loop
A section of a supernova remnant, where the blast wave meets interstellar gas.
This is a fragment. The Cygnus Loop is a supernova remnant around three degrees across — six times the width of the full Moon — and what Hubble frames here is a small section of its edge, where the expanding blast wave runs into interstellar gas.
Two filters only: hydrogen and oxygen. The wave is moving fast enough that the two do not light up in the same place — oxygen glows where the shock is hottest and youngest, hydrogen behind it, as the gas cools. The offset between the two colours is the shock front itself.
